Sangath—Vastu Shilpa Consultants / Udaipur, India / 250 Acres / Under Construction / 2015—17
Role: I worked across the architecture and urban design scale, on the design of the staff and faculty housing. I contributed to design, detail and construction.

The IIMs are a group of public institutes for management education in India. Sangath won a competition for the masterplanning and architectural design of one of six new IIMs. Phase 1 of the project, the west campus is currently under construction in Udaipur. The site is located 8 km from the historic core of the city, along the Golden Quadrilateral Highway. The existing landscape on the site is marked by sharp slopes and deep valleys. Monsoon rains transform the area for a short while, but water quickly drains away, and the land is left arid again. To this background of landscape conditions and campus self-sufficiency, the basis of the design is formed by the retaining of water. By placing check dams at strategic locations within the terrain, a system of interlinked lakes is created. For faculty housing clusters, the original slope of the hill is modified to create a number of terraces that are either used for building or as public space. The design is inspired by patterns of urbanization in Udaipur — housing following the contour until it reaches the towering fort on the hill.
